\u00ab\u00a0I\u2019m taking a deep dive into that legislation,\u00a0\u00bb he said.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0People have also talked to me about potentially raising the maximum penalty, and also looking at when weapons are involved. These are all factors that I\u2019m considering quite closely.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

The federal government says an estimated 90,000 cars are stolen annually in Canada, resulting in about $1 billion in costs to Canadian insurance policy-holders and taxpayers.<\/p>\n

The issue has now become a major political question, with the government\u00a0convening the\u00a0national summit this week and the Conservatives\u00a0putting forward their own\u00a0potential solutions on the issue.<\/p>\n

Just before the summit, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre proposed a suite of legal reforms to increase penalties for car theft, including tougher restrictions and penalties for repeat offenders.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s justice minister \u2018actively exploring\u2019 options for tougher car theft penalties<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Justice Minister Arif Virani says he\u2019s considering a range of tougher penalties to clamp down on the growing problem of auto thefts.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Canadians don\u2019t need another summit, they need a common-sense plan to stop the theft and end the crime,\u00a0\u00bb he said Monday.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Barton, Virani noted there is a mandatory minimum penalty for auto theft, with a minimum of six months in jail for those convicted of a third offence. There\u2019s also a maximum penalty for summary conviction auto theft offences, which the government increased in 2019 to two years, up from 18 months.<\/p>\n

Changes could address organized crime, Virani says<\/h2>\n

Law enforcement and other officials have identified organized crime as a major driving force behind car thefts, with a well-organized system of theft and export set up through major hubs like the port of Montreal.<\/p>\n

Over the course of the week, law enforcement described a system in which some people\u00a0\u2014 often minors\u00a0\u2014 are recruited to identify and steal vehicles before they are transported out of Canada.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0This is a game of cat and mouse. These are sophisticated, international organized crime groups that are constantly trying to stay one step ahead of manufacturers by investing in technologies that will effectively break through the security systems,\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0Brian Kingston, head of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers\u2019 Association, told CBC Radio\u2019s\u00a0The House<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who has promised tougher sentences for auto theft, said \u2018everybody is at risk now\u2019 after he was asked about the repeated theft of the vehicle assigned to Canada\u2019s justice minister.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Virani said he would prioritize measures that would address the core issue of auto theft\u00a0\u2014 the prevalence of organized crime\u00a0\u2014 and not just the most obvious culprits.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0What struck me at the auto theft summit was the level of organized criminality and their involvement [in auto theft], the level of violence we\u2019re seeing, weapons, people\u2019s doors being broken into and even carjacking,\u00a0\u00bb Virani said Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Sometimes the quick reaction is to go after sometimes a person who\u2019s as young as 16\u00a0who\u2019s engaging in these thefts, but they\u2019re being orchestrated and masterminded by a criminal operation,\u00a0\u00bb he said.<\/p>\n

Virani\u2019s own experience has added fuel to the political fire around car theft, with revelations that his government car was stolen last November, but eventually recovered. That turned out to be the third time the justice minister\u2019s car had been stolen, with the two previous thefts occurring\u00a0before he was sworn in.<\/p>\n

He said that experience helped drive home the severity of the situation.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0This is an issue that\u2019s touching all of us,\u00a0\u00bb he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
